The Martin D-18 Dreadnought has become one of the standard go-to guitars, used by artists in almost every genre. Introduced in 1932 with a 12-fret neck – the 14-fret neck was added in 1934 – the Martin D-8 dreadnought is based on the 1916 – 1930 Dreadnought 111 for the Oliver Ditson Company. Only 18 of that model had been built.

The Martin D18 Dreadnought has been one of the staples of the Martin line, and the choice of countless guitarists since its introduction in 1931.  Built with a simple pairing of Sitka Spruce for the top and tropical Mahogany for the sides, back, body blocks and neck, the D-18 also features Ebony for the bridge and fingerboard and Indian Rosewood for the head plate. ❌SOLD❌ Martin D18 Custom Shop Natural, 2010

This Martin D18 Custom Shop is closely based on a classic, and has been one of the most popular guitar designs since its mass market introduction in the early 1930’s. The basic Dreadnought design itself dates from mid 1910’s models built for the Oliver Ditson company. Like many guitar companies, the Martin Custom Shop allows customers to specify particular features, tailoring the instrument to their own needs. Here, this Martin D18 Custom Shop guitar was ordered with just a few modifications – a slightly narrower nut and some D28 appointments, particularly the rosette.

The Martin D18 Dreadnought appeared in 1931 as banjo players increasingly converted to guitar, and required ever increasing volume levels. For the first three years, the D-18 was built with a 12-fret neck, but the banjo influence quickly added two more frets clear of the body. As a 14-fret dreadnought, the D18 and its sibling the D-28 rapidly became the guitar of choice for country, bluegrass and folk players.
