Fender Champ Lap Steel, Desert Sand 1959

Fender Champ Lap Steel, Desert Sand 1959

This Fender Champ Lap Steel, built during 1959 at the Fender plant in Fullerton, California is in very nice, mostly original condition. The Fender Champ Lap Steel was often sold as part of a starter set, with Fender’s smallest amplifier – the 5 watt Champ. That amp itself went on to become very popular in some recording studios. For example, it’s the amp Eric Clapton used for much of the Derek and the Dominos – Layla album.

Gibson SG Standard Tribute Walnut 2019

Gibson SG Standard Tribute Walnut 2019

The Gibson SG Standard first appeared in 1961 as a radical update to the Les Paul model, and bore the Les Paul name until 1963. This change had two drivers – one, Les Paul himself was not overly fond of the design, and his endorsement association with Gibson was coming to an end, partly due to complications with his divorce from Mary Ford. With the change in name, the Les Paul models disappeared from production until 1968, its resurgence sparked by the combination of that guitar and Marshall stacks as used by British blues-influenced players.

Kay Old Kraftsman Red Devil K592 Thinline Electric Red, 1962

Kay Old Kraftsman Red Devil K592 Thinline Electric Red, 1962

Here is a very cool piece from 1962 – a Kay Old Kraftsman Red Devil model K592, the top of the Speed Demon line, built for the Spiegel catalog and direct mail company. This model was built between 1962 and 1965. Kay began in 1931 as the successor to the Stromberg-Voisinet, which was itself the 1921 successor to the Groeschel company, founded in 1890. Based in Chicago, Illinois, for a time Kay was one of the largest instrument builders in the USA, and supplied many catalog companies and department stores.

Kammerer Scorpius Thinline Electric Guitar, Cherry

Kammerer Scorpius Thinline Electric Guitar, Cherry

The Kammerer Scorpius was Jon Kammerer’s original guitar design. Here built with a carved Cherry body and Maple neck with Ebony fingerboard, these are well made instruments.
Jon Kammerer has been building for over twenty years although he is not a household name. Aside from his innovative custom guitar work, his shop is also built to manufacture components, such as necks, for other builders.

Schecter C-1 Apocalypse

Schecter C-1 Apocalypse

The Schecter C-1 Apocalypse model is a fast playing workhorse of a guitar. It features a double cutaway super strat style body with an arched top and a super comfortable set neck with ultra access to the upper frets. The combination of the slim c neck profile, the compound radius of 12” to 16” and stainless steel x- jumbo frets makes big string bends and wide vibrato a breeze. The swamp ash body is light and balances well and looks great with the rust grey finish.

Harrison GB Custom Redwood Burl Top, 2017

Harrison GB Custom Redwood Burl Top, 2017

Here is a lovely Harrison GB Custom Redwood Burl top thinline archtop, built in Toronto during 2017 and based on a design for the late jazz artist Gary Benson. Douglas Harrison has been building arched top guitars for some years now and his GB Custom has been very popular, with most I have seen being true custom models, with varying tops and hardware configurations.
