The Collings MT A Style mandolin is the entry point for Collings mandolins, and its lack of decoration doesn’t hide the quality of the instrument or the care with which it was built. The A Style mandolin appeared in the closing days of the 19th century as part of Orville Gibson’s revolutionary introduction of violin making principles to mandolin construction. The results were such a dramatic improvement that the centuries old European bowl-back design almost died out in short order.
Engelmann Spruce
Here we have another unusual instrument, a Sergei de Jonge 7 String Short Scale guitar with an Engelmann Spruce top and back and sides of Yew. Sergei de Jonge has been building for decades, beginning around 1969 in Toronto with Jean Larrivee, following an introduction by the late and celebrated guitar teacher Eli Kassner. After working with Pat Lister in Collingwood around 1971, de Jonge set up his own shop in Toronto in 1972 and has been building nad teaching on his own since then, aside from a one year break while living in Holland. Currently his shop is located in Chelsea, Quebec.

MORE →‼️Reduced‼️ The Collings OM2H is based on the venerable ‘Orchestra Model’ design, which is a bit bigger than the 000 size and has a longer scale length – 25.5 inches instead of 24.9. This model pairs a Sitka Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the back and sides. The neck is Mahogany, as are the body blocks, and Ebony is used for the bridge and bound fingerboard and head plate. Inlay material is Abalone for the ‘snowflake’ position markers and Mother of Pearl for the headstock Collings logo.

MORE →Here is a very nice Collings MTO GT A Style mandolin from 2011. The GT simply means ‘Gloss Top’, with the rest of the instrument in a non-gloss satin finish. The Collings MTO is based on the classic Orville Gibson A Style ‘teardrop’ design dating back to the end of the 19th century. The A and F styles were radical departures from traditional mandolins and merged violin family construction concepts with the mandolin.
