The Godin Multiac Jazz, like other Multiac models draws from the early 1980’s Gibson Chet Atkins Classical concept – a solid bodied, set-neck guitar with a piezo bridge pickup and preamp set. While Gibson did not pursue this as diligently as they might have, Godin stepped up to produce an excellent, durable and very versatile instrument with a wide range of applications, and very little feedback at stage volumes!

The Godin Multiac Jazz SA is one of the many Multiac variants, here with a highly figured Maple top, chambered Maple and Poplar back, Maple neck, Richlite fingerboard and a range of pickup options including synthesizer output. Built from 1989 to about 2017 at the historic Parsons Street plant in Kalamazoo Michigan, the Heritage H555 evokes the higher end, groundbreaking thinline archtop electrics of the late 1950s. The Heritage Guitar Company was founded in 1985 by a number of former Gibson employees who chose not to relocate when Norlin, then Gibson’s parent company, moved operations to Nashville in 1984. They stayed behind, purchased the plant and began producing professional and higher grade instruments clearly influenced by their experiences.

Signature models are sometimes unusual, as is the case with the Gibson Herb Ellis Plus – the two pickup version of the Herb Ellis ES-165, built from 1991 to 2013. The late Herb Ellis was one of the more prominent American Jazz guitarists, and his 1943 spot in Glen Gray’s Casa Loma Orchestra (that name is meaningful to those in Toronto, but it seems the band is not related to the Gothic Casa Loma mansion) brought him to the attention of the jazz world.

Built at his workshop in Mississauga, Ontario, the Anthony Karol Orchestra Model is a fine example of skill and meticulous craft work. The Orchestra Model design is based closely on the classic 000 body size, but normally has a longer scale length. Karol makes the body slightly wider and rounds the shoulders for slightly increased bass output, with the goal of a more even response across the spectrum.
