This Collings GoldTop CL City Limits is special, apparently being the second GoldTop CL personally made and finished by the late Bill Collings himself. This guitar model clearly draws from a the classic pairing of Maple and Mahogany, and this very early Collings Gold Top CL has some subtle shaping differences to distinguish it.

The Jerry Jones Neptune Shorthorn Bass 4 draws from a classic American design by Danelectro, and was built in Nashville from 1981 to 2011. At that point, Jones retired and liquidated his shop. Danelectro was operated from 1946 to 1969 by Nathan Daniel and from 1966 to its close was owned by the MCA record company. Specializing in mass produced, low cost but decent quality instruments and amplifiers, Danelectos were largely available through catalog stores like Sears & Roebuck and Montgomery Ward but often under other names including the Sears brand Silvertone.

MORE →The Danelectro 59 12 String D5912 recreates a classic 12. Originally successful in its orientation as a decent budget instrument, these new models at least as good. Based closely on the original double cutaway ‘Shorthorn’ two pickup models, the new Danelectro 59 12 String D5912 features the same ‘Masonite’ and hardwood body construction with a Maple neck and Pau Ferro fingerboard.

MORE →The Jerry Jones Neptune 12 is now a fairly unusual guitar, based on vintage Danelectro designs, and was one of the best affordable electric 12’s available before Jones closed in 2011. The plant had run since 1981 and in April 2011, Jerry Jones retired and the entire contents of the plant were sold at auction. Danelectro instruments and amplifiers were built from 1946 to 1969, guitars under that name from 1954 and had an unusual construction scheme.

MORE →Designed by George Gruhn with the staff at Guild, built from 1984 to 1991, this thin-bodied acoustic electric guitar has an under-saddle pickup with controls on the side. These are common features now, but at the time they were groundbreaking. The Guild Songbird Thin Body Acoustic Electric features a spruce top paired with mahogany for the body and neck, and rosewood for the fingerboard. The Fishman Transducer is coupled with side-mounted controls featuring a four-band EQ, volume control, and phase switch. Helpfully, there is an LED indicator for the battery being engaged, or low, and it’s always good to have warning of a low battery. The standard 9v battery compartment is easily accessible on the back of the guitar. Tuners are gold-plated Grover Roto-Matics and work well.
