Here we have another rarity – from September 1993, a Gibson Custom Shop SG in Emerald Green Metallic finish with gold hardware and pearloid pickguard! The Gibson SG had been produced for three years before it gained the name ‘SG’. It was originally introduced in 1961 as a complete redesign of the then-unpopular single cutaway, carved Maple top Les Paul model. An additional driving factor was addressing Fender’s characterization of Gibson as old-fashioned.

Here we’re looking at a Gibson S1 built in Nashville TN, with a date of April 19 1978. This guitar is built exclusively of Maple, used for the three-piece body, three-piece neck, and fingerboard. This example is in largely original condition, except for the bridge pickup. Some time ago, the original single coil was removed, put in the case, and replaced with what looks like a Duncan Hot Rails.

The Gibson SG Standard Bass is a rebuild of the classic Gibson EB-3 basses used from 1953 into the mid 1960’s, particularly by Jack Bruce in Cream. Gibson introduced their first electric bass in 1953, the violin-shaped Gibson Electric Bass as a response to Fender’s ground-breaking 1951 Precision Bass.

This beautiful Gibson Les Paul Standard, built during 2005, sports a nicely figured Maple top set off by a Sienna Burst finish. This example is very resonant and very solid, with no apparent weight relief. Following the original combination of a carved Maple top on a Mahogany back and a Mahogany neck with Rosewood fingerboard, this Gibson Les Paul Standard Sienna is in overall good condition with light wear to the back from contact with the player’s clothing.

SOLD Gibson Byrdland Thinline Archtop Electric Natural, 1976

The Gibson Byrdland appeared in 1955 as a custom order for Billy Byrd and Hank Garland. These two were top Nashville session guitarists who wanted full archtop tone, but in a more comfortable thinner body and a shorter scale length – 23.5 inches, rather than Gibson’s standard 24.75 inches – to allow easier access to complex chords fingerings. The Byrdland was the first of Gibson’s thinline archtop guitars, with many more to follow. The design was so successful that it was quickly promoted to production status.

The Dobro Style 27 Squareneck seen here was built during 1979 at the OMI (Original Musical Instrument) plant in Huntington Beach, before OMI’s sale to Gibson. Dobro had a long and somewhat complex history. Founded in 1928 by John, Rudy and Ed Dopyera – the Dopyera Brothers, shortened to DoBro – as John split from the recently formed National String Instrument Corporation.
