Charvel DK24 guitars are known for their fast playability, wild finishes and pro features at a great price. The purple burst finish on a quilted maple top is sure to stand out as you blaze up and down the 24 fret speed neck with its smooth satin finish. Here we’re looking at a gently used Charvel DK24 HH QM built during 2018 in Ensenada, Mexico – at the same plants where Fender does their Mexican production.
Hardtail
The Fender Stratocaster HardTail was available alongside the revolutionary and better known 1954 tremolo-equipped version, and only discontinued around 2010, due to declining sales. Many country and rhythm players preferred the Fender Stratocaster HardTail for perceived increases in ‘snap’, sustain and tonal separation, and a slightly ‘drier’ sound than comes from the lack of trem springs. While many players block or otherwise disable the Trem, hard tail Strats never sold like the trem versions have.

MORE →The Hamer Monaco Super Pro was built in the USA from 2002 to 2012 as a single cutaway, chambered solidbody with a figured Maple cap on a Mahogany slab body. The neck is Mahogany, with an Indian Rosewood fingerboard and 25.5 inch scale length. For hardware, Schaller tuners are used, and a standard Tune-o-Matic bridge and stop tailpiece combination. Seymour Duncan custom pickups run through a pickup selector, master volume and two tone controls.

MORE →Here we have a Fender Stratocaster HardTail, built at the Fullerton plant during 1978, during the CBS era. The HardTail version was made from 1955 until 2006, when poor sales caused Fender to drop the HardTail model. The two Stratocaster versions are very similar, but the fixed hardtail bridge model doesn’t have the large cavity routed on the back for the trem block and springs. Without that cavity and the spring components, the Fender Stratocaster HardTail tends to have a bit more sustain and note-to-note clarity and separation, as with the Telecaster. Of course, this means it does not have the ‘built-in reverb’ contributed by the springs, whether the bridge is set to trem use, or fully tightened down for tuning stability.

MORE →The Ernie Ball Music Man Reflex HH HardTail guitar appeared during late 2009 and was built until 2017, when it underwent a number of electronic improvements and became ‘The Game Changer’. Somewhat similar to the Axis line, the Ernie Ball Music Man Reflex HH uses three woods for the body – a Basswood shell, Mahogany tone block, and a Maple cap. The neck is a traditional Maple, with either an integrated Maple fingerboard or a Rosewood slab board.

MORE →Built from 1981 to 1985, the Hamer Prototype was unique for its time and introduced a number of concepts that are now commonplace on production guitars, and not just on custom builds. Paul Hamer and Jol Dantzig opened Hamer Guitars in Willamette, Illinois in 1973 and began building custom designs based on Explorer and Flying V body shapes, with wild finishes and unusual hardware combinations.
