Collings OM 2H Orchestra Model Natural, 1998

Collings OM 2H Orchestra Model Natural, 1998

The Collings OM2H is based on the venerable ‘Orchestra Model’ design, which is a bit bigger than the 000 size and has a longer scale length – 25.5 inches instead of 24.9. This model pairs a Sitka Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the back and sides. The neck is Mahogany, as are the body blocks, and Ebony is used for the bridge and bound fingerboard and head plate. Inlay material is Abalone for the ‘snowflake’ position markers and Mother of Pearl for the headstock Collings logo.

Collings OM2H Orchestra Model Sitka Top, 2008

Collings OM2H Orchestra Model Sitka Top, 2008

The Collings OM2H Orchestra Model is a top quality take on the classic OM guitars that date back to the late 1920s, as the great migration of banjo players to guitar began. The OM is based on the 12-fret neck, 1928 Martin 000 body size, which was modified to allow the 14 fret neck that banjo players needed for higher position chording. The upper bouts were ‘flattened’ to accommodate this neck. The 14 fret neck was so successful that on steel string guitars, it completely displaced the 12-fret neck. It’s only in the last few years that builders have been offering 12 fret necks again.
