The Taylor LKSM – the Leo Kottke Signature Model – is now discontinued but is one of the best choices for fast, articulated 12-string guitar styles. Leo Kottke has been closely associated with the 12-string guitar for most of his career, and often played models by Bozo Podunovak, Gibson and Martin. Known for his fast, loud and well articulated playing, Kottke used both thumb and finger picks until the 1980s when tendonitis forced him to stop playing for several years.

Dobro Model 60D-S Square Neck Shaded, 1988

This Dobro Model 60D-S Square Neck Resophonic guitar with shaded finish was built during 1988 in Huntington Beach, CA by OMI, the Original Musical Instrument Company. OMI was founded in 1967 by two surviving brothers of the Dopyera family, Rudy and Emile. This Dobro Model 60D-S Square Neck guitar dates to 1988, based on the serial number stamped on the top of the headstock.

Nechville Leon Hunt Phantom Banjo Maple, 2012

The Nechville Leon Hunt Phantom Banjo, while not a ‘formal’ Nechville model, is based on the Nechville Phantom XXV (Phantom 25). It uses all the Nechville Phantom elements plus very highly figured maple for the neck and resonator (rather than the stock figured walnut construction), with a slight walnut tint to the finish.

Gibson RB-250 Mastertone Banjo Natural, 1977

The Gibson RB-250 Mastertone was the working-musician’s banjo for decades and offers that classic Gibson sound with the “Snap” to the treble attack that only Gibsons have. This is essentially the same banjo as the famous Gibson RB-3 without the Wreath inlay.

The Gibson SG Standard and Custom first appeared under the Les Paul name but with a complete redesign, in late 1960 as 1961 models. Built with the now-familiar double cutaway Mahogany body with Mahogany neck and Rosewood fingerboard, the re-design offered lighter weight and complete access to the upper frets.
