Gibson SG Special VOS Classic White, 2008

Gibson SG Special VOS Classic White, 2008

The 2008 Gibson SG Special VOS replicates the 1963 style, with a pair of P90 pickups and Classic White finish. Currently this model is offered as the 1963 SG Special Classic White Ultra Light Aged. Like the SG itself, the SG Special originated as a Les Paul model, officially renamed in late 1963 at the end of Les Paul’s endorsement contract

With the 1961 revamp and rename of the Les Paul line in 1961, the Gibson SG Special came on stage. Using the same basic construction as the Standard or Custom models, the SG Special lowered price points by minimizing decoration.

The Gibson SG Special first appeared under that name in 1963, but began as the Les Paul Special in 1955, and was discontinued in 1971. Construction is pretty straightforward, with a slab Mahogany body and a Mahogany neck with Rosewood fingerboard. Indian Rosewood replaced Brazilian around 1965.

The Gibson SG Special first appeared in 1959, but as a Les Paul model featuring a slab body with rounded double cutaways. For 1961, the Les Paul line was completely redesigned and by 1963 the SG name replaced Les Paul’s. Here we’re looking at a Gibson SG Special in the classic Gibson cherry finish, with the short Vibrola tailpiece and compensated ‘stop bar’ bridge combination.

Differences between the Gibson SG Special and SG Standard don’t jump out at first. The main visual elements are the same – the same wood selection, shape, and gloss lacquer finish. However, the Special has an unbound fingerboard with dot markers, gold-decal Gibson logo and ‘SG’ engraved on the truss rod cover. The SG Standard has a bound fingerboard, trapezoidal markers, Mother of Pearl Gibson logo plus the ‘Holly’ inlay on the headstock. As well, the pickups are uncovered on the Special, while the Standard pickups have metal covers.
