The Fender American Vintage ’62 Jazz Bass was built from 1999 to 2002. As part of the American Vintage series, this bass reprises the early specifications of the highly influential successor to the revolutionary Precision bass.
Slab Board
Seen here is a Fender Stratocaster Refinish in Fiesta Red, the body and neck built during 1961 in Fullerton California. It looks rather like a ‘Hank Marvin’ Stratocaster; when the Shadows were at their peak, many Strats in the UK were refinished in Fiesta Red, often by the official Fender distributor who could not get enough stock of that colour.

MORE →This Fender 59 Reissue Stratocaster sports the 3-tone sunburst Fender introduced in 1958, and the ‘Slab’ Rosewood fingerboard used when Fender first offered alternatives to one-piece Maple necks. The body is Alder, which follows the model history. Fender initially used Ash or Swamp Ash, but by 1958 started to use Alder. With that change, a new finishing process was also used where the body wood was directly stained with yellow rather than adding yellow tint to clear lacquer (as is done with the red and black bands for the rest of the sunburst).

MORE →Here is a wonderful rarity – a Fender Stratocaster 1961 model in its original sunburst and with a Rosewood ‘slab’ fingerboard on a Maple neck with heavy Birds-Eye figuring. Introduced in 1954 as a follow up to the highly successful Telecaster, the Stratocaster had only minor alterations until mid 1959 when it gained a major new feature – a Rosewood fingerboard – taken from the new-for-1958 Jazzmaster.

MORE →Here we have a Fender Jazz Bass dating to 7 May 1962 with a Burgundy refinish replacing the original Sunburst. This is a fairly rare Rosewood Slab Board model, indicating a type of neck built in Fullerton, California until mid 1962. The Fender Jazz Bass was introduced in 1960, aimed at the Jazz bass players who had not adopted the Precision Bass or who wanted a thinner neck and more focused tone. The Offset Body that debuted on the 1958 Jazzmaster was used for the Jazz Bass body.
