SS Stewart Model 4024 Archtop Guitar Sunburst, 1930s

SS Stewart Model 4024 Archtop Guitar Sunburst, 1930s

Here’s a lovely piece – from the early 1930’s, an SS Stewart Model 4024 archtop guitar, built by either Regal or Harmony and sold through Buegeleisen and Jacobson, owners of the Stewart brand. The SS Stewart company, named for Samuel Swain Stewart was a major producer of banjos between 1878 and 1904, and was bought by B&J (Buegeleisen and Jacobson) a few years after Stewart’s death. Over the years, B&J shifted to producing mostly guitars with the brand, had many companies build the actual instruments including Chicago Musical Instruments, who also built Harmony, Kay, and Silvertone brands.

❌SOLD❌ SS Stewart Flat Top Acoustic Guitar Sunburst, 1932

Built around 1932, this SS Stewart flat top acoustic guitar was one of thousands made in Chicago as players moved away from banjos and towards guitars. The venerable SS Stewart brand started before the turn of the century as a premiere banjo maker. Following Stewart’s death, the brand changed hands and by the 1930s was built by Chicago Musical Instruments, who also made Harmony and Kay guitars.

❌SOLD❌ S S Stewart The Amateur Open Back Banjo, 1899

Shown here is a lovely S S Stewart The Amateur Open Back Banjo, Grade 2 model, built around 1899 after Stewart’s death in April 1898.  The ‘Grade 2’ designation means that it’s a more advanced model, not that it’s a second.
This fine open-back banjo features the original tailpiece, friction tuners, a period Rogers calf skin head and standard dowel stick adjuster system. This is one of the few of these banjos we’ve seen that have all the original finish, hardware, tension hooks and name plaque complete and in place. Apparently the original owner, a Mr. AL M. Dodgson, carved his initials into the dowel stick — no doubt a hundred years ago or more.
