It never ceases to amaze me how good steel string acoustics can sound, and I’m reminded of it every time a guitar like this 2017 Collings OM1 Custom Deep Body custom arrives.
This Collings OM1 – the full model name is OM1 GVN Custom – arrived today and is just exceptional. The deep body (dreadnought depth) adds dimension to the tonal balance of the Orchestra Model body design, and Collings does an exceptional job of voicing. As usual, the build quality fit and finish are near perfect and it shows in the smallest details. As an OM1, the sides, back and neck are mahogany, with ebony for the fingerboard and bridge, and single layer black binding.
This guitar has several options on the basic OM1 package. It has a German Spruce top, Adirondack Spruce bracing, no tongue brace, the deep body, a ‘Vintage Now’ neck, and 1.75 inch nut spacing. A standard Collings OM case is included.
The builder says this about the ‘Vintage Now’ neck used on the 2017 Collings OM1 Custom Deep Body:
“The next size up is the profile called “Vintage Now” which has slightly wider spacing at the saddle (2 5/16″) with 1 3/4″ at the nut. This neck is slightly larger than our standard (non-vintage) profile, but is not quite as large as some of the chunkiest vintage Martin necks. This neck has more of a vintage feel, but is more palatable than our standard Vintage neck (see below) to a lot of players. The neck shape is slightly rounder (less V) in the lower position and moves towards a modified V shape as you go up the neck. The neck depth (including the fingerboard) is typically .845″ at the 1st fret and .960″ at the 9th fret. The fingerboard width measures 2.195″ at the 12th fret.”
