At The Twelfth Fret, we carry a wide range of instruments, many of them higher end. However, we do carry good quality inexpensive guitars, and many of these are made in Canada by Robert Godin’s companies.

These instruments are often intended for people starting out. However, if you’re interested in playing guitars, there are a number of circumstances where an inexpensive guitar, sometimes even with a laminated top, is the better choice.

Recently, we noticed an upcoming artist going by the name Shakey Graves playing an Art and Lutherie Ami Spruce Burgundy, and getting a great tone and feel with it.

The Art and Lutherie Ami Spruce Burgundy is a low cost yet good quality 12-fret parlor size guitar, built in Princeville, Quebec by the Godin Guitar company.

The Ami Spruce Burgundy features a solid spruce, pressure tested top, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard and bridge, and Wild Cherry back and sides.

The Ami Spruce is quite good sounding, and the parlor body size paired with a 12-fret neck makes the guitar compact and easy to reach; if you’re travelling, the advantage of the compactness is obvious.

Tonally, these guitars are very well suited to acoustic blues and folk styles. Compared to high-end instruments, they do not offer as much harmonic detail and separation, but this isn’t always an issue; in fact, sometimes it’s a benefit.

Hear the Art and Lutherie Ami Spruce Burgundy on the tune ‘Late July’ by Shakey Graves. In this video, Mr. Graves also explains how he came by his name. He’s quite good and his material is well worth checking out.

You may note that Mr. Graves amplifies the Ami Spruce with a Danelectro Honeytone mini-amplifier. On larger stages, he’s seen using Fender Blues Juniors.

The Art and Lutherie Ami was also available with a cedar top, in black and antique burst finishes; and as a nylon-string version with a cedar top and natural finish.
