Here’s a treat – a Graham Caldersmith Concert Classical Number 73 guitar from 2009, with lattice-braced Red Cedar top and lovely American Walnut for the back and sides.

Graham Caldersmith has long been interested in musical instruments, and after a detour that led to a Masters in Aerophysics – advanced study of Mars – in 1978 he decided to shift to full time lutherie. His shop builds concert classical guitars, violins, violas, and cellos, based on careful research he himself conducts.

This Caldersmith Concert Classical is number 73, and was built during 2009 in Comboyne, New South Wales. Like many modern classical guitars, it has a Red Cedar top. Unlike most modern classicals, it has a very nicely figured American Walnut back and sides, the back laminated and arched to provide strength and improve soundboard efficiency. The neck is mahogany, with Ebony for the fingerboard and Rosewood for the head plate bridge and arm rest.

Very unusually for any classical guitar, this instrument is equipped with a double-acting truss rod, accessed through the sound hole with an allen key.

Gold-plated Schaller tuning machines with faux perl buttons are installed at the head. A pair of tap plates have been installed to the top, always a good idea with Cedar.

The top is lattice braced in the Smallman style, using carbon fibre and balsa. Though thin, it is extremely strong, and this translates into a guitar with unmistakable levels of volume and projection. This is loud!

This Caldersmith Concert Classical Number 73 guitar has been used as intended, and there is some wear to the satin finish particularly on the back. It plays well, and has a full, rich tone, which is delivered in bulk.

The original Hiscox case is included.
