❌SOLD❌ Collings MF5 F-Style Mandolin Sunburst 2012

The Collings MF5 F-Style mandolin is an impressive instrument – this is about as good as production mandolins get, with exquisite workmanship and ethereal tone. The MF5 draws from the early, groundbreaking mandolins built by Orville Gibson, blending Violin and traditional Mandolin construction techniques to provide an entirely new instrument that has almost completely displaced the European style bowl-back mandolin.

Here we’re looking at a Collings MF5 built during 2012 at the Collings shop in Austin, Texas. It features a hand-carved and voiced Red or Adirondack Spruce top paired with a spectacular hand carved, bookmatched Flame Maple back and matching sides. The neck is also Maple, with a bound Ebony fingerboard, Ebony headplate and bridge. The Mother of Pearl inlays are restrained- a small ‘Flourish’ decoration on the head plate, and dot markers on the fingerboard. The body is bound top and back, as is the fingerboard and top surface of the head stock.

The finish is typically Collings – an extremely well executed nitrocellulose lacquer sunburst, as thin as possible while still allowing a level, gloss surface. This finish is hardly showing any sinking at all, even after seven years.

This fantastic instrument is in great condition. Originally purchased from The Twelfth Fret, this Collings MF5 has been played but well taken care of. Fret wear is light, and there is only one small mark on the top near the bass F hole.

It should not be thought that the strength of this mandolin is in its aesthetics. On the contrary, it is an extremely good sounding instrument, and plays very well.
