Brand: D'Angelico
Instrument Categories: Archtop, Guitars, SOLD
The D’Angelico EXL-1 is a re-creation of one of the famous archtops built by John D’Angelico in New York during the 1940’s and 50’s. D’Angelico died in 1964 and his apprentice Jimmy D’Aquisto took over the shop. The two of them are widely regarded as the finest archtop builders. Around 2011, the D’Angelico brand was purchased and new models were released, with design and construction help from Victor Baker.
This D’Angelico Exl-1 Excel dates to 2013. It features the 17 inch Excel body with spruce top, maple for the back, sides and neck, and ebony for the fingerboard and bridge. The finish is a tinted clear, to suggest the appearance of an aged clear lacquer. The original Kent Armstrong pickup has been replaced with a DiMarzio Blues Bucker. Some versions of the EXL-1 used a neck-mount smaller humbucker but this guitar used the full-size top mount pickup. It’s in very clean condition, plays well, and comes with its original D’Angelico arched top and back hardshell case.
