Edgar Monch was one of the more important classical guitar builders from Munich, the other being Hermann Hauser. Monch lived for some time in Toronto where he was also a highly influential teacher for many early Canadian luthiers including Jean Larrivee. He was himself a student of Marcelo Barbero in Madrid during the 1950s. Born in 1907, Edgar Monch died in 1977.

Classical guitars built by Edgar Monch are professional concert grade instruments and have been played by the time’s top artists including Julian Bream, John Williams, Andres Segovia and Vicente Gomez.   It is unusual to find a Monch guitar available for sale.

We have done some work to restore this fine guitar to full playability. Some repairs have been done over time including some finish overspray on the top, but the guitar is largely original. The tuners are Hauser-style likely by Reischl.

This Edgar Monch Classical Guitar is built in the traditional Spanish ‘slipper heel’ design, with the sides tied into the neck block. The top is Spruce, the sides, back, headplate and bridge are Indian Rosewood. The neck is Mahogany with an Ebony fingerboard.

Here are comments from Grant MacNeill, who converted the bridge:

“This guitar was built in 1968, during Edgar Mönch’s ‘Toronto period’ before he returned to Germany. This example has enjoyed a lot of playing time.

The top has numerous crack repairs. All are stable with tidy interior cleats and were professionally done many years ago. The top has been over-sprayed. The rest of instrument is original lacquer. I converted the bridge to a 12 hole tie-block to recapture down-bearing to permit lowering the saddle. This is a thoroughly playable and great sounding 50 year old guitar at a very reasonable price.”

A standard Everest hard shell case is included.
