Here’s something we see rarely – the Eminence Portable Upright Bass! This innovative instrument brings the tone and response of an upright bass into a foldable format, with the case not much bigger than a set of golf clubs.

The Eminence Portable Upright is an acoustic / electric instrument, and takes lessons learned from the early days of electric guitar development when archtops were adapted with pickups. It was quickly discovered that electrifying traditional ‘solid wood’ construction has downsides, particularly in terms of feedback as volumes rise (as they will!). Quality laminate woods are much more feedback resistant. The Eminence body is a mixture of a Spruce laminate top, with Maple laminate for the sides and back. The detachable neck is solid Maple with a solid Ebony fingerboard. It is electric, with a Realist pickup installed to the height-adjustable Maple bridge, with the output jack on the tail plate.

We can’t locate a serial number or dating information for this instrument. It is in overall good working condition with light to moderate wear. It has been used on a number of higher-end concert stages and performances, and has been well taken care of. Two cases are included – a gig bag and a

The Eminence Portable Upright is based on an original instrument designed and built in 1990 by the late Scott Zumberg. As its owner travelled the Midwest, it came to the notice of Gary Edward Bartig, owner of G. Edward Lutherie. When Scott Zumberg died in 1993, Bartig sought and received permission to develop the instrument. For this purpose, GELBass was formed as part of G. Edward Lutherie, specifically to develop and produce the Eminence Portable Upright Bass. These basses were built and sold for about 25 years.

The primary dealer for the Eminence Portable Upright Bass was Gollihur Music. In late April 2022, worldwide supply chain issues, plus a desire on the part of Gary Bartig to focus on other projects, led to Gollihur assuming full rights to develop, produce and market the Eminence. Bob Gollihur died on July 20, 2022.
