Fender 57 Reissue Precision Bass Sunburst, 1982

Here we have a Fender 57 Reissue Precision Bass, in two-tone sunburst and built during 1982 in Fullerton, California, during the period of CBS ownership.

This bass reproduces the second major evolutionary step of the P-Bass towards its current form. Initially, the Precision Bass used a slab body and single-coil pickup. To keep pace with the ‘New for 1954’ Stratocaster, in that year the Precision Bass also received body contours. This lasted until 1957, when the new hum-cancelling split pickup was introduced. A new anodized pickguard and larger peghead were also added. At this time, the neck was still one-piece Maple construction with a walnut ‘Skunk Stripe’ covering the channel created to allow truss rod installation. Fender introduced the Rosewood fingerboard in 1959, and for that year basses started to feature the Rosewood – Brazilian Rosewood at the time – ‘Slab’ style, flat bottomed fingerboard.

This Fender 57 Reissue Precision Bass follows the 1957 pattern. It’s in good shape, with expected wear in the form of small dents and dings. Fret wear is light to moderate, and wear to the fingerboard is very light; this suggests that it was played with flat or ground-wound strings, though it presently carries a new set of round-wounds.

This bass has had one very functional and reversible ateration. In place of the stock low E tuner, a lever-operated Hipshot Bass Xtender or ‘D-Tuner’ has been added; this allows a very fast change from an E to a D on that string.

A Fender hard shell case is included with this bass.
