Fender from time to time delivers Limited Edition models, like this Fender Limited Edition Two Tone Telecaster Thinline with bound Fiesta Red top, white finished back, and Rosewood fingerboard!  These were built in small numbers, and are not common to see in catalogs or promotions.

In the late 1960, Fender’s hunt for new designs continued and this led to the hiring of German luthier Roger Rossmeisl, who had been responsible for a number of Rickenbacker’s most successful semi-hollow models and the ‘Cresting Wave’ shape. One of Rossmeisl’s 1968 efforts appeared as the Telecaster Thinline, which was created by cutting the top layer off an ash or mahogany body blank, routing chambers in the back section, then re-applying the top. This led to a very light weight, resonant guitar. In 1971, the ‘stock’ Telecaster pickups were replaced with a pair of Fender’s new Wide-Range Humbuckers, and in 1980 the model was discontinued.

The Fender Limited Edition Two Tone Telecaster Thinline blends features from several guitars. It uses an Ash body, chambered as on other Thinlines, but the top is bound. A pair of Fender Custom Shop Hand-Wound ’51 Nocaster Pickups are installed, and the volume control has a Treble Bleed circuit, which prevents loss of highs when the volume control is turned down. The neck is Maple with a Rosewood slab-style fingerboard.

The Two Tone Telecaster Thinline gets its name from its finish – the top is Fender’s classic Fiesta Red, with colour-matched headstock front, and is bound with black plastic binding. The back finish is Arctic White. The pickguard is the original style faux-mother of pearl model, with a single 3-way selector switch and master volume and tone controls. A vintage-style bridge with three steel saddles is installed. Tuners are vintage-style Kluson Deluxe reproductions.  Blending the old and new, the neck plate is a stable four bolt design that incorporates the Micro Tilt mechanism for fast neck angle tweaks.

The Two Tone Telecaster Thinline is a very interesting guitar. It is one of the lightest weight electric models, at just over six pounds (2.75kg), and is very resonant and responsive. The chambered semi-hollow body can reduce to a very slight degree the sharp edge of pick attack, but that’s easily overcome if it is even noticeable.

The original Fender hard shell case is included.
