The Twelfth Fret ~ Since 1977 ~

❌SOLD❌ Fender Mustang Solidbody Guitar Red, 1966

The Fender Mustang appeared in late summer 1964 as an improved version of the Duo-Sonic, meaning that it had the Fender Dynamic Vibrato added. It came in three colours, for the US Flag – Red, White and Blue. The ‘custom colour’ names like Dakota Red or Daphne Blue were never applied, though the tints are very similar.

This particular Fender Mustang dates to 1966 at the Fullerton California Fender plant, recently purchased by CBS and at the point where changes really started to show up. For example, the 1966 Mustang has a larger headstock, new decal, and F-stamped neck plate. The construction is typical Fender, with a Poplar or Mahogany body, Maple neck with bonded Rosewood fingerboard bolted on.

These are short scale guitars, at 24 inches, but they were used by a number of professionals – Johnny Winter was known to use a Mustang during some periods.

This is one of the cleanest Mustangs I’ve seen in many years. Aside from the strap buttons, it is all original and complete – the bridge cover is included as well. The re-issue case is not original. The finish is checked as expected from 50+ year old lacquer, with a few small dents but nothing significant. And as a short scale, light weight guitar, it’s really fun to play!
