This is an exceptional treat – a Fender Precision Bass Sunburst dated to January of 1959, with the original tweed case, possibly original but certainly period strap, and brought in with the 1957 Fender Bassman amp (sold separately) the owner used in a band called the “Down Unders”.

Leo Fender introduced the Precision Bass in 1952, following the lead of the very successful Telecaster line. The use of the term ‘Precision’ in the name refers to the addition of frets to the bass. Until this time, bass players used fretless upright basses, and so pitches could vary from time to time. With the new Fender bass, the band could be sure that bass notes would precisely match the intended pitch. It took some time for jazz bassists to fully embrace these new models, but because of their accuracy – and portability! – the time of the upright bass was passing. The 1952 Precision Bass had a slab body, much like the Telecaster, but for 1954 it gained a contoured body much like the debuting Stratocaster, and importantly a split pickup in humbucking configuration. Since then, the Precision Bass has been in constant production without straying far from its 1954 design.

This Fender Precision Bass Sunburst was used for many years by its original purchaser – its only owner – performing with his band the Down Unders around Ontario. It’s in remarkable shape, and its neck date is 1-59. The finish has a relatively small amount of natural play wear – rear buckle rash and a couple of small chips on the edges. It is nitrocellulose lacquer on the body and neck, and this has natural and expected checking.

This historic Fender Precision Sunburst bass is a real pleasure to play and has a great tone and feel.

The original tweed hard shell case is included, and in its pocket are a period strap and curly cord.
