This very nice, all original condition Fender Stratocaster 1965 sports a three-tone Sunburst finish and Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard, and comes complete with its original case, bridge cover, trem arm, strap, hang tags and booklet!
Following the revolutionary Telecaster and Precision Bass designs, the Stratocaster was an immediate hit at its 1954 introduction. It quickly appeared in the hands of artists of many genres, perhaps excepting jazz players. To address that, in 1958 Fender introduced the new Jazzmaster with a Rosewood fingerboard, and that feature was extended to the Stratocaster in 1959. These Rosewood boards at first had flat bottoms and were referred to as ‘Slab’ boards. By 1962, Fender had tooled up to allow use of a thinner, curved veneer style board, as is seen here.
This 1965 Fender Stratocaster is one of the best preserved we’ve seen for a while. It has definitely been played, but not heavily, and is all original and complete. It dates to late 1965, with pot codes for the 49th week of 1965 – December 6th to 12th. CBS had taken over Fender at the start of the year, and this example has the new style ‘F’ neck plates and ‘Transition’ decal – which is in undamaged condition. It still, however, has the original small peghead shape. The electronics include the original 3-way switch. The frets are original and have only light wear. The fingerboard itself has no significant wear.
There are a few marks to the finish on the back and a couple of chips around the edges, but otherwise it is in very good clean condition.
The original rectangular hard shell case, black with orange interior, is in good shape and included. It contains the original strap, hang tags, booklet, bridge cover, trem arm, and a set of Fender strings in mid 1960’s packaging!
