Here we have the Fintan McEnroe Fin MC9 F-style mandolin from Fintan McEnroe, working in Toronto but originally from Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan, Ireland. The ‘9’ in the name refers to the mandolin serial number and production sequence; the Fin Mc 8 mandolin was sold recently.
The Fintan McEnroe Fin MC9 is a traditional F-Style mandolin, with a carved Sitka Spruce top and Curly Maple for the sides, neck and carved back. The fingerboard and bridge are Ebony and the neck contains an adjustable truss rod. The body has double layer binding, and the inlays are a combination of Mother of Pearl and Abalone. The finish is a hand-rubbed lacquer sunburst.
The headstock inlay set is a variation on a traditional ‘Torch’ design, differing from the MC8 inlay. The inlaid abalone pieces of the torch and Fin Mc logos are contained by transverse lines of abalone bound in purfling. Above the torch is the Fin Mc logo in Mother of Pearl. An interesting touch is a torch inlay found on the treble and bass body sides. Position markers are inlaid lines at the fingerboard edges, joined into the lines of the fingerboard purfling.
Overall the Fintan McEnroe Fin MC9 a very fine instrument, well thought out, cleanly and well built, with a very nice finish. And it sounds and plays as good as it looks!
The Fintan McEnroe Fin MC9 is sold with it original lightweight Gator hard shell case.
