The Gibson 1958 Les Paul Standard introduced not only a new version of the Les Paul design, but was also the first of the ‘Burst’ models.

Here we have a lovely, brand new Gibson 1958 Les Paul VOS NH Reissue in Bourbon Burst. This beautiful instrument strives to be an accurate reproduction of an aged – new old stock and Vintage Original Specification – with oxidized nitrocellulose lacquer finish and nickel hardware. It is not a ‘Relic’ model and has none of the simulated wear or chipping resulting from those processes.

An interesting detail is that the pickups, a pair of Custom Bucker Alnico III models, are unpotted.   Potting became common during the 1980s as stage volume hit their peaks and microphonic feedback from unpotted pickups emerged as a serious problem.  Many pickups are wound with some slack to prevent coil wire breakage either during winding, with later temperature fluctuations or with physical contact. At high volumes, the coil windings will resonate and induce feedback.    This type of feedback is immediately identifiable by its high pitch and is nothing like the feedback from a hollow body guitar.

Potting pickups in molten paraffin wax became a regular task in many repair shops, including The Twelfth Fret’s, and eventually pickup manufacturers started potting as part of their production process. There were a small number of manufacturers who potted with epoxy.   This proved to be inappropriate, as it is not thin enough to penetrate the windings and truly dampen feedback. Because the epoxy can not be removed, any damage to these pickups – even lead wires broken close to the surface-  is not repairable.

More From The Builder On The Gibson 1958 Les Paul Reissue:

“The 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue features all the painstaking historic construction methods of the famous ’59 Reissues with a few historically-accurate spec differences that allow it stand on its own.

Like the 1958 originals, it has narrow frets which help more of the fingerboard wood to be heard in the tone profile. It also has a round, chunky neck profile for a full feel and maximum bending leverage.

And finally it has a beautiful plain maple top; each is unique and full of character. Available in a variety of classic sunburst shades. “
