The Gibson 1964 J160E, built in Bozeman Monatana, reproduces one of the most recognisable steel string guitars – John Lennon’s 1964 model J-160E used on countless performances and hit recordings with The Beatles.

Based on the dimensions of the proven standard J-45, the J-160 is built to be amplified. Not only does it not have the J-45’s X braces – using stiff Ladder bracing instead – laminate Sitka Spruce is used for the top, mahogany for the back and sides. The pickup is basically a P-90 single coil, mounted inside the top at the end of the fingerboard. Volume and Tone controls are on the top, and there’s an output jack on the side.

This example was built during 2001 at the Gibson Acoustic plant in Bozeman, Montana and is based on the 1964 J160E specs though I suspect that the neck width is modern – early 1960’s necks tended to be fairly narrow. It’s in very good clean condition, and plays very nicely.

This is really meant as an amplified rhythm guitar. The construction doesn’t allow for a lot of complexity in the tone, but in some cases – like placing a guitar in a mix – less can be a lot more, and it shines at this.   It can be put exactly where it needs to go, and stay there.

Gibson doesn’t often produce this model possibly because frankly,  it’s somewhat limited tonally. One of the more recent runs has been the 70th Anniversary John Lennon model, which can be examined at the ‘manufacturer’ link below.

The original hard shell case is included.
