While it has strong visual similarities to the popular ES-339, the Gibson CS336 compact thinline has significant differences in construction. Instead of using separate materials for the top, back and sides, the CS336 has back and sides carved from a single block of mahogany with a carved, book matched Flame maple top.

The Gibson CS-336 came out of the Custom Shop in 2001, five years after the 1996 introduction of the ES-339.  It is a 13 inch wide small body version of the classic ES-335 design with some differences.

While the ES models use laminated maple for the top, back and sides, the body of  the Gibson CS336 compact thinline is built in two pieces.  The top is book matched, carved figured Maple and the back and sides are cut and carved from a block of Mahogany.   This carving produces chambering and supports for the top; apparently this concept goes back to Orville Gibson. The neck is the same design on both variants, Mahogany with a 24.75 inch scale bound Rosewood fingerboard.

This Gibson CS336 compact thinline likely had an F, for Figured Top, designation though it has no label. It dates to 2001, was built in Nashville, and is in all original, good condition with almost no fret wear.  This has been played, however, and there is some wear and scuffing to the finish. The burgundy-stain finish is quite dark, but the pronounced curl or flame figure is visible. The nickel plated hardware has light tarnish.

This guitar plays very well and cleanly. The smaller body used on the Gibson CS336 compact thinline is very comfortable, and its special construction adds to its resonance and responsiveness.

The original Gibson Custom hard shell case is included.
