Introduced in late 2001 and built until 2010, the Gibson CS336 is based on a scaled-down ES-335, but there are some significant differences. The body blends a carved, two piece solid Maple top with a solid piece of Mahogany, shaped and routed to provide the inner resonant chambers and the solid center block. In the ES-335 design, the top, sides and back are built traditionally using Maple laminate, with a solid Maple center block added. On this model, the bound fingerboard is Indian Rosewood with dot position markers.

Here we’re looking at a Gibson CS336 in Faded Cherry finish, built during 2004 at the Gibson Nashville plant, and with a Bigsby B5 added using a Vibramate V5 adapter kit. This Vibramate adapter couples the Bigsby to the threaded stop tailpiece collets, allowing installation without drilling any holes and leaving no permanent modifications. With appropriate attention to the setup details common to every trem system – particularly that the strings don’t bind in the nut – this setup stays in tune very well.

The Gibson CS336 features a Vintage 1960 taper neck profile which is very comfortable and a bit narrower and slimmer than the 50’s profile necks. The balance is good and the weight is moderate at around 7.3 pounds (3.32kg). Hardware includes vintage-Kluson Deluxe style tuners with plastic Keystone buttons, nickel-plated ABR-1 tune-o-matic bridge, and as stock, a stop tailpiece that here has been removed for the Vibramate and Bigsby. Pickups are Classic ’57 models, with standard Gibson 2 volume, 2 tone wiring with a 3-wway selector switch in an almost ideal location.

This guitar has been used as intended, and has light wear and some oxidization to the Faded Cherry nitrocellulose lacquer finish and pickup plating. Fret wear is light, and the guitar plays cleanly at a standard action height.

The original Gibson Custom hard shell case is included.

This model was discontinued in 2010 but at the moment, there is an archive page at the Gibson site that can be viewed here.
