The Gibson EDS-1275 is the company’s current doubleneck design with six and twelve string necks. This design addresses a number of performance issues, primarily how to avoid switching instruments when a piece calls for both six and twelve string parts.

Shown here is a Gibson EDS-1275 doubleneck in cherry finish, built mid 1990 at Nashville, Tennessee. It is in very good, clean and almost entirely original condition with its original rectangular hard shell case. The pickup covers have been removed from the six-string neck pickups. The body and slightly shorter scale necks are Mahogany, with Indian Rosewood for the bound fingerboards. The headstock Gibson logo and split-parallelogram position markers are Mother of Pearl. Hardware includes Gibson Deluxe tuners with plastic Keystone buttons, standard tune-o-matic bridges with six saddles, and an EDS-specific hook tailpiece. For electronics, there are two unpotted Alnico III Custombuckers, a neck selector (upper, lower, and both), a pickup selector, and one set of volume and tone controls. The finish is Gibson’s standard dark cherry nitrocellulose lacquer, with a bit of very light scuffing on the back. Fret wear is vanishingly light and would be invisible after polishing.

The original rectangular brown Gibson USA branded hard shell case is included.

From 1958 to 1961, Gibson offered two custom-order doubleneck models, the EDS-1275 with an upper 12-string neck and the EMS-1235 with an upper mandolin neck. Both had a sealed hollow body with a carved Spruce top on a Mahogany body. For 1963, the EMS was dropped and the EDS-1275 received the then-new solid body soon named SG.

Several artists have made the Gibson EDS-1275 instantly recognizable, notably Jimmy Page for Stairway to Heaven and Don Felder for Hotel California, and John McLaughlin for his Mahavishnu Orchestra work.
