The Gibson ES-175 has been a mainstay of the guitar world since its introduction in 1949, used by jazz, country, rock and pop players, from Herb Ellis to Steve Howe.

Early in the development of the electric guitar, builders realized that the classic carved solid top and back used in pure acoustic archtops didn’t really work well when electrified. Adding the weight of pickups and cutting spaces for them had little benefit to tone, and the boxes were designed to be responsive – so they would quickly feed back. Using laminates helped a lot as much of the tone came from the pickups, and the laminates didn’t feed back as quickly. Consequently, most of the successful electric archtops have used laminates for the body.

Here we have a Gibson ES-175 dating to August 11th, 1998 at the Nashville, Tennessee plant. It is in very clean condition with minor wear, and very nicely figured top and back. Fret wear is moderate, and there’s a bit of natural corrosion on the nickel plated parts.  The original brown hard shell arched top case is included.
