From its launch in 1949 until it was finally discontinued in 2017, the Gibson ES-175 Archtop Electric was the benchmark guitar for working jazz guitarists.

The Gibson ES-175 archtop electric was in production for such a long time because it does exactly what many jazz and rock guitarists needed it to do. Comfortable and reliable, the ES-175 delivers a rich tone and its laminate construction makes it feedback resistant, compared to carved solid top models. To that point, it did sometimes appear on large, higher volume rock stages, notably in the hands of Steve Howe of Yes. It was also a common choice for early rock and rockabilly artists.

The Gibson ES-175 Archtop body is built with Maple laminates, with Mahogany for the neck and Rosewood for the fingerboard, with split-parallelogram position markers. The sunburst finish was standard.

This 1964 Gibson ES-175 Archtop Electric example was built at the historic Gibson plant in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It is complete and carries its original hardware, including Patent No. pickups (with Patent No, decals, not stampings), ABR bridge on Rosewood base and a nickel-plated tailpiece.

The nitrocellulose lacquer finish is in good shape with natural checking and honest play wear. It appears to have been professionally refretted at some point, and so fret and fingerboard wear is insignificant. Presently strung with flatwounds, this guitar plays very well.

A period hard shell case is included. At the time this Gibson ES-175 Archtop guitar was built, duties were such that many musical instrument makers shipped without cases to their distributors, who then re-packed the guitars in locally built cases.
