The Gibson ES 175D, now discontinued, was one of the most popular archtop electric models for working jazz players, with classic lines and tone. The ES-175 first appeared in 1949 with a single P-90 pickup at the neck position, and was followed by the Dual pickup ES-175D in 1953. In 1958, the P-90 pickups were replaced with Gibson’s new humbucking pickups.

Quickly adopted by working guitarists, the Gibson ES 175D has appeared on countless recordings and stages, from small clubs to arenas and stadiums and in most musical genres.

Here we’re looking at a Gibson ES 175D, dating to August 10th, 1979 at the Kalamazoo Parsons Street plant. It is in exceptionally good and original condition, with possibly the exception of the bridge. Wear is extremely light, with little visible wear to the frets, fingerboard or finish. It is strung with flat wound strings, which helps to explain the lack of fret wear.

This guitar comes from the era when Gibson was moving from Kalamazoo to Nashville, a process that took the decade from 1974 to 1984. It carries the ‘Union Made’ label, and the tailpiece has a Gibson logo engraved on the string bar.

The Gibson ES 175D is harder to find lately, as Gibson has discontinued the model. This exceptional example is one of the best preserved I have seen. It plays cleanly and well – the neck is a bit narrower than the later models, which I find more comfortable.

The original Gibson hard shell case with some Gibson documentation is included.
