The Gibson ES 335 changed many things when introduced in 1958, combining the feedback resistance and sustain of a solidbody with the ’rounder’ tone of an archtop. This has been one of Gibson’s most successful models, and is still in production.

Here we’re looking at a Gibson ES 335 variant – the ES 335 DP, indicating that it has double pickups and a plain top. It’s built in the same way as the other members of the line – the ES 345 and 355 – with Maple Laminate for the top, sides and back, solid Maple for the center block that provides the feedback resistance, Mahogany for the neck and Indian Rosewood for the fingerboard. Grover Roto-Matic tuners are at the head, a standard Tune-o-Matic and Stop Tailpiece set on the body. A pair of Classic ’57 humbuckers run through standard Gibson electronics – pickup selector and individual volume and tone controls.

This Gibson ES 335 DP was built at Gibson’s plant in Nashville and dated to December 14th, 2012. It was built so late in 2012 that it is stamped ‘2013’ below the serial number on the back of the headstock. While it’s in quite good shape overall with minimal wear, it has had a professionally done headstock repair, which is solid and sealed. Fret wear is minor, and at this point Gibson had been using fairly large frets for some time.

This guitar plays well and sounds great. These are very versatile guitars, handling everything from country to jazz to rock and back again. It’s very comfortable to play, with lots of traction and clarity from the larger frets.

The original Gibson hard shell case by TKL is included.
