❌SOLD❌ Gibson ES125 D Sunburst, 1957

Here is a rarity, built only during 1957 and in a quantity of less than 30. While the base model is common, the two pickup Gibson ES125 D is not.

Introduced in 1946 as the effects of WW2 wound down, demand rose and materials became available again, the Gibson ES-125 was intended as a student model but has been used by many professionals over the decades. The ES-125 line was discontinued in 1970, though after 1960 or so most of the related models had the ‘T’ or Thinline body that was introduced in 1956. All of the electric versions used one or two P-90 pickups.

The ES125 was built like the ES-175 with a body of Maple laminate, Mahogany for the neck, body blocks and linings and Rosewood for the fingerboard and bridge base. For all but the last few years of production, anything Rosewood meant ‘Brazilian’ Rosewood.

Here we are looking at a Gibson ES125 D built during 1957 at the historic Gibson plant in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It’s in overall good condition, and largely original – the control knobs and switch tip have been changed and the pickguard is long gone, and the case is a newer hard shell. As these were lower cost ‘student’ models, the original case would likely have been faux-gator fibre or cardboard.

At this point, many of Gibson’s guitars did not have serial numbers, instead having FON or Factory Order Numbers. Here, the FON is U 3068 25, with the U designating the year of production, the 3068 the batch number and the 25 the position in the batch.

This rare guitar is in good working order, and very playable. Fret wear is light to moderate, and the finish has expected and natural lacquer checking.

A modern, arched top hard shell case is included; the case has a replacement handle.
