Here in very good condition – and very white – the Gibson Les Paul Custom built during 2007 in Nashville. This clean example is in original condition with minimal wear to the finish or gold plating, though there is some wear to the plating where the player normally touched it – the bass end of the bridge and the metal tuner buttons, for example.

Built in the Nashville Custom Shop, Gibson Les Paul Custom example is in great shape with very light wear to the frets and finish. At this time, Gibson installed 490R and 490T pickup sets and the potentiometers have the Gibson logo stamped on their backs. It plays very well, and is sold with its original black TKL ‘Made in Canada’ case.

Gibson launched the Les Paul Custom in 1954 as an upmarket version of the 1952 Les Paul Model. By 1954, the construction issues around the trapeze bridge and neck angle had been resolved, and the ABR-1 ‘Tune-O-Matic’ and stop tailpiece combination were introduced. The new Les Paul Custom was still routed for Gibson’s P-90 pickups, but in the neck position, an AlNiCo ‘Staple Top’ version was used. Visually, the Custom was dressed as if in a tuxedo – gloss black finish, gold plated hardware, binding on the top, back, fingerboard and headstock with multi-layer purfling on the top and headstock, and the head gained a Mother of Pearl Gibson logo and split-diamond inlay. The fingerboard was Ebony with rectangular Mother of Pearl block position markers rather than the Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard with trapezoidal markers – or dots – on all the other Les Paul versions. Underneath, there was another significant difference – the body and its carved top were both Mahogany, not a Maple cap on a Mahogany back. These changes remained in place until 1957, when Gibson’s new Humbucking pickups became available and the pickup routes changed to accommodate them. However, due to poor sales, in 1961 the original single-cut design was dropped in favour of what is now known as the SG, and the Les Paul name was dropped in 1963. When the single-cut Les Paul re-appeared in 1969, the Custom had the same Maple cap construction as all the others.

At time of writing, this configuration of the Gibson Les Paul Custom is not in production.
