Making its debut appearance in 1969, the Gibson Les Paul Deluxe layout was based on the 1950’s pre-humbucker P-90 models. The Deluxe body construction uses the same Maple cap on a Mahogany back as the Standard humbucker version, but the pickup routes accept either P-90s or mini-humbuckers which are mounted in P-90 sized support rings. At introduction, the Deluxe carried the GoldTop finish, followed in in 1971 by Cherry Sunburst and Cherry Red, in 1972 by Tobacco Sunburst, and in 1975 Wine Red and Natural finishes. Production ended in 1985.

Seen here is a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe built during 1975 in Kalamazoo Michigan. At this point the Mahogany body back is the layered ‘Pancake’ style and the Maple cap has the GoldTop finish. The neck uses three pieces of Mahogany plus two small sections to fill out the headstock; the fingerboard is Indian Rosewood. The headstock pitch is 14 degrees, and there is a small volute behind the truss rod cavity. For hardware, Gibson Deluxe tuners with plastic keystone buttons are installed, matched with a standard ABR-1 tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece set. Electronics start with the mini-humbuckers, which deliver a brighter, tighter response while still being hum cancelling, followed by standard Gibson wiring with a pickup selector and individual volume and tone controls.

This Gibson Les Paul Deluxe is in overall good condition for a now 49 year old instrument that’s been used as intended. Fret wear is light to moderate, and the finish has expected wear, oxidization and natural lacquer checking. It plays well, and has the distinctively crisp Les Paul Deluxe sound.

A non-original hard shell case is included.
