Gibson Les Paul Junior Cherry, 1962

Instrument Categories: , ,

Gibson first introduced the Les Paul Junior with their 1954 model lineup as their lowest price student model, with one pickup and no frills. It kept that position until 1959, when it was bumped by the Melody Maker.

From 1954, the Les Paul Junior had a profile very much like the Les Paul itself – it looked like the Les Paul’s Mahogany back, just without the carved Maple cap. For 1958, Gibson was shifting to double cutaway bodies, reflected in the brand new ES-335, and the Junior also got a double cutaway treatment. In 1961, sales of Les Paul models had triggered a complete redesign of that entire line to a double new cutaway. Within a couple of years, with the termination of Gibson’s agreement with Les Paul, these models were renamed to SG.

Here we’re looking at a Gibson Les Paul Junior, built at the Kalamazoo, Michigan plant likely during 1962. It’s in largely original condition with no breaks. The finish has aged nicely, with the cherry stain quite red on the back where it was exposed to less light, shifting to a much paler red on the top, and faded where the player’s hand slid along the neck. The single P-90 pickup is original, as is the pick guard. Unfortunately this original pickguard has warped somewhat. The Kluson Deluxe strip tuners at the head are original. Fret wear is moderate to heavy in the lower positions. The installed “lightning bolt” bridge, a combination of stop tailpiece and wraparound, is not original though the original part is in the case.

This Gibson Les Paul Junior  is a great guitar to play. It’s light extremely responsive, and the sound of a P-90 is full, rich, and thick.

A molded Fender hard shell case is included.
