The Gibson LG1 was introduced during 1942 along with the LG-2 and LG-3 as entry level models – and with the US entry into WW2, but after about 100 of each were built, both the LG-1 and LG-3 were discontinued for the duration of the war. While the LG-2 was built throughout WW2, the LG-1  and LG-3 were not built from 1943 to 1945.  In 1958, the LG-0 was introduced.   The LG-0 and LG-1 were discontinued in 1974 and the LG-2 and LG-3 were replaced by the B-25 series in 1962.

These LG models, with a few wartime exceptions, featured Sitka Spruce tops paired with Mahogany for the sides, back, and neck, with Rosewood for the fingerboard and bridge. At this time, Rosewood was generally sourced from Brazil.   A small number of wartime models used Maple for the sides and back and the earliest LG-1 production had  X-braced Mahogany tops.   After production resumed in 1946, the Gibson LG1 models were all given Ladder bracing and Spruce tops. To 1946, the Gibson logo was a white ‘Script’ design, and in 1947 the screen-printed gold block logo seen here was introduced and is still in use.

Here we’re looking at a Gibson LG1 with a FON – Factory Order Number – indicating a production date in 1949 or possibly early 1950. It is in good working order with a fair amount of genuine honest play wear. The tuners have been replaced. This example has had well-executed significant service in the form of a neck reset and re-fret. All steel string acoustic guitars will suffer from a ‘sagging’ neck joint over time, sending the action height up. A neck reset involves dismantling and re-shaping the dovetail neck joint so that the neck angle allows for low action. The refret also included ‘planing’ the fingerboard (though this is done not with a plane but with a long block and sandpaper), and as a result the board surface is clean and level with negligible fingernail wear.

As a result of this service, this Gibson LG1 has a true vintage look and tone and is ready for many more years of use.

The original case for this guitar would have been a faux-gator fibre (cardboard) case and these typically did not age well at all. We are supplying a new basic hard shell case with this guitar.
