❌SOLD❌ Gibson LG3 Steel String Guitar Natural, 1949

Here we’re looking at a Gibson LG3, built at the Parsons Street plant in Kalamazoo Michigan during 1949. This guitar features an X-Braced Sitka Spruce top, paired with Honduran Mahogany for the sides, back, body blocks and neck. The fingerboard and bridge are Rosewood, and for the entire production life of this model, that meant Brazilian Rosewood. The pickguard is faux tortoise, and the natural nitrocellulose lacquer finish is original, as are the open-gear strip tuners.

This lovely small Gibson LG3 is in largely original condition but has recently had the necessary neck reset, which means that it’s got a very playable action, and its original straight saddle has been replaced with a much wider Bone saddle built for compensation, providing better intonation. It is possible that it was refretted some time ago and fret wear is light. The finish shows natural lacquer checking and expected dings and dents, given its age.

These guitars were intended as student models, and were used by thousands of players as their first ‘real’ guitar. They play well, and sound pretty good.

A newer black Gibson hard shell case is included.

At introduction, all three LG models would have used Adirondack Spruce for the tops and bracing, but that species was quickly allocated for aircraft production, being a bit stronger than other Spruce species. From the start of the war until now, Sitka Spruce has been the predominant wood for North American guitar tops. Adirondack Spruce is finally recovering from over-harvesting and is starting to be offered on higher end guitars again.
