The Twelfth Fret ~ Since 1977 ~

❌ SOLD ❌ Gibson SG Custom Natural Mahogany, 1974

The Gibson SG Custom appeared in 1963, though originally as the new, slim double cutaway 1961 Les Paul. By 1963, Les Paul’s endorsement with Gibson had ended, so his name was removed.

Featuring the now-familiar solid mahogany body, the SG Custom differs from ‘lesser’ SG models with bound neck and headstock, ebony fingerboard with Mother of Pearl block inlays, gold hardware, either a Vibrola or Stop tailpiece, and often three pickups.

This SG Custom dates to 1974 and was built at the Gibson Nashville plant. It features a natural mahogany finish, tinted ‘Walnut’ with three pickups and a combination of stop tailpiece and long-travel tune-o-matic bridge common to the period. The longer saddle travel available with this bridge allows it to be mounted ‘square’ to the centre line of the guitar, rather than angled as is normally the case with narrower bridges.

The pots and electronics date to 1974, and the original tuners have been replaced with gold Grover locking Roto-Matics. The original tuner mount holes have been filled and there is an amount of lacquer oversprayed, on top of the original finish. It’s been refretted with a relatively large wire and there’s moderate fret wear, but plenty of material for any dressing and reshaping.

The body is made of three pieces of mahogany, and on the back there is a visible line along the bass side seam, though it seems solid.

The original hard shell case is included.
