❌SOLD❌ Gibson SG Elite Metallic Sunset, 1987

Built from 1987 to 1988 and based on the SG-62, the Gibson SG Elite offered a number of hardware changes, including an optional Kahler SuperTune vibrato system. It also has a slightly shorter scale length at 24.56 instead of 24.75 inches.

Sporting the ‘Metallic Sunset’ finish, this Gibson SG Elite is in good, all original condition with light fret wear and some wear to the gold plating particularly on the neck pickup. The nitrocellulose lacquer finish is showing some natural and expected checking, and has a few small dents and dings from use.  It plays well  and cleanly as is.

This version of the Gibson SG Elite does not have the optional Kahler trem bridge, but it does have the stock Kahler flip-lever locking nut coupled with a TP-6 fine-tuner tailpiece. That tailpiece was used on a number of other models, particularly the BB King Lucille.   The tuners are Grover Roto-Matics.

The Gibson SG Elite is closer to the SG Custom models than the SG Standard, and this is most visible in the Ebony fingerboard with Mother of Pearl block markers. However, it does not have the bound headstock or headstock inlay of the Custom. Like most SG models, its core is a Honduran Mahogany body and neck. All the metal hardware was Gold plated.

For electronics, the 1987 Gibson SG Elite used a pair of ‘Spotlight’ humbucking pickups designed by Tim Shaw, a three-way selector switch, two Volume and one Tone control, and a coil split switch instead of the usual second Tone control. In 1988, these Spotlight pickups were changed to ‘The Original’ models designed by Bill Lawrence, which used a circuit-board base instead of stamped metal.    The two Volume control knobs are missing their inserts, but the Tone control still has its insert.

The original brown Gibson hard shell case is included.
