Introduced in 1938, the Gibson SJ-200 was the top of the line, ‘King of the Flat Tops’, the largest and fanciest non-archtop model. In 1938, the price was a whopping $200, and as an option, you could have your name inlaid on the fingerboard for $50! It went straight to stages and studios, and has been there since. The SJ-200 has appeared on countless recordings, not just Country – both Pete Townsend and Jimmy Page relied on it.
The Gibson SJ-200 is built in two versions, one using Maple for the back and sides, the other Indian Rosewood. The Maple version is more common, and has lots of treble and bite, helping it cut through as a rhythm guitar. The Rosewood version is mellower and warmer sounding. Sitka Spruce is used for the top, and the neck is a three-piece construction, Maple with a Walnut center strip. Rosewood is used for the bound fingerboard and for the classic cut-out ‘moustache’ bridge. All of the inlay is Mother of Pearl.
Currently, the Gibson SJ-200 is built in Bozeman, Montana at the Gibson Acoustic plant. Here, we are looking at a 2015 SJ-200 Standard model, in all original and very nice condition. There are a couple of small pressure marks on the top, but otherwise the finish is in good shape. As from the builder, a Fishman Aura Ellipse system is installed, with the controls mounted inside the bass side of the soundhole.
The original hard shell case is included.
