The Godin Multiac Grand Concert has become a very successful and immensely practical instrument, and is based directly on the Gibson Chet Atkins CE Classical Electric from 1981.

By the early 1980s, Chet Atkins had shifted largely to playing nylon string guitars, but the instruments available at the time were strictly acoustic and not really suited to the realities of touring, and amplified or broadcast stages. On Atkin’s request, Gibson produced two models of a solidbody nylon string guitar, using Mahogany for the neck and a slab body, adding a Spruce top. A six-element piezo pickup was added to the bridge. The guitar was also equipped with a 9v powered pre-amp. This model was offered until 2005, but was never really successful, for a variety of practical, business and marketing reasons.

However, Robert Godin saw this as a significant opportunity and re-created the CE using a much lighter, chambered Mahogany body with a solid Cedar top, bolt on Mahogany neck with Richlite fingerboard, and a far more advanced pickup and EQ set from RMC electronics that offer both straight guitar and synthesizer outputs. This model, the Godin Multiac Grand Concert, is a nearly perfect response to the needs of many nylon string players, especially those in Latin and Jazz contexts but also Classical players who recognise that their environments challenge their use of straight acoustic instruments.

The Godin Multiac Grand Concert offers – and delivers – nylon string response and characteristics but with almost complete feedback rejection at stage volumes. It’s stronger and lighter than acoustic Classical or Flamenco models, and is physically stabler in the wide range of environments a musician enters. It is not as responsive or full sounding as a master-built Classical guitar, but it is an excellent compromise. In addition. it has a crowned fingerboard, appealing to players coming from steel string guitars.

Here, we’re looking at a Godin Multiac Grand Concert built during 2002. It is in good, clean condition with light wear and includes the Synth access circuitry. It plays well, and has a good acoustic tone with characteristic nylon string responsiveness; played un-amplified, it is very well suited for low-volume practice.

This instrument is sold with a black hard shell case.
