The Guild CE-100 – the Capri – was a very successful model for the company, produced from 1956 to 1984, in one and two pickup versions.

A fully hollow, laminate body, single Florentine cutaway archtop model rather like the ES-175, the 1956 Guild CE-100 first had a single Franz single coil pickup in the neck position. In 1959, the dual pickup CE-100D appeared, and in 1963 the Franz pickups were replaced with new Guild humbuckers.

A detailed discussion of Guild pickup history and particularly the HB-1 can be read here, and the other mini versions here..

By 1973, the single pickup CE-100 was discontinued, and the CE-100D became the ‘new’ CE-100. This model was finally discontinued in 1984.

Construction of the Guild CD-100 is fairly standard for an electrified archtop. To reduce feedback, the top, back and sides are Maple laminate, and the top has a pair of long braces. The neck is Maple, with two main outer sections with a Walnut strip in the middle; the headstock is built out with other smaller Maple sections. Before the end of the 1970’s, the neck was Mahogany, built in the same way. The bound fingerboard is Indian Rosewood. For hardware, Guild branded tuners were likely supplied by Schaller. The pickups are Guild HB-1 models, with standard pickup selector – individual volume and tone controls. The output jack is on the lower treble bout. The tailpiece is the Guild ‘G’ harp, in chrome plating; the pickguard is Guild’s stairstep model in five layers of black and white. The installed bridge is a tune-o-matic type, adjustable for height and intonation, and likely not original.

Here we’re looking at a 1979 Guild CE-100 BLD (Blonde) in good, almost entirely original condition, including the HB-1 pickup set. What may not be original is the adjustable bridge and its base, as many of these shipped with a traditional Rosewood height-adjustable part. Otherwise, the parts are all in good shape, the plating and finish have only light, expected wear. This guitar was played, but looked after. It’s also strung with flatwounds, which has kept fret wear to a minimum – it is just light to moderate.

The original hard shell case is included.
