Here we’re looking at a very early Guild S-300 with a bolt-on Maple neck, built in late 1976 before the switch to a set-neck design. The S-300 was an original design, moving away from the rather derivative ‘SG’ shaped S-100 though much of the hardware and wiring was shared.

This unusual and rather rare guitar is in overall good and original condition with normal and expected wear to the shaded, tobacco sunburst nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The clear neck finish is in better condition, and fret wear is generally light.

At launch, the Guild S-300 used a contoured Mahogany or Ash body and bolt-on Maple neck (three piece including the Walnut center section) with a 24-fret Ebony fingerboard. Within a very short time, the design changed to a Mahogany set neck, Maple if the body was Ash. Only the initial, late 1976 price list mentions the ‘detachable’ neck, the 1977 catalog shows a set neck. Hardware includes Guild-branded, Schaller made tuners, the Guild roller bridge and a bolt-down stop tailpiece. The wiring is straight forward, with a pair of Guild HB-1’s (or diMarzio Super Distortions for the ‘D’ variants) leading to individual volume and tone controls, phase switch, pickup selector and output jack, all mounted to the top.

Other options: In 1977, the Guild S-300D appeared with diMarzio Super Distortion pickups – which also displaced the use of Guild pickups in the new B. C. Rich models. The S-300A had an Ash body and Maple neck, and was also available as the S-300AD with the Super Distortions.

Sold with a gig bag.
