Here we have a fairly rare bird – the Guild X79 Skyhawk in white, produced in Westerly Rhode Island from 1981 to 1986, this one dating to 1984. The construction of this model is simple – the body and set neck are Mahogany, with an un-bound, 24-fret Ebony fingerboard. Those last few frets were very rare at the time!

Founded in 1952 with many skilled workers from Epiphone, which had moved from New York to Philadelphia in a move to break a strike, Guild had long been known for archtop and steel string acoustic guitars, but thinline and solidbody electrics were in their catalog, too. Guild had made odd shaped guitars, including the S-200 Thunderbird seen on the cover of Electric Mud, the 1968 psychedelic album by Muddy Waters. The Guild X79 Skyhawk took things further with exaggerated points on the body and almost completely unrestricted access to the 24-fret neck.

For many years including the entire period of production for the X-29 Skyhawk, Guild used serial numbering systems specific to each model. Guild X79 Skyhawk serial numbers started with AD and six digits, with the first being around AD100000. The last known serial in 1986 was AD101790, so approximately 1790 were built.

This Guild X-79 Skyhawk is in overall good condition with a few chips and dings to the finish, to be expected on an almost 40 year old guitar that’s been used as intended. Fret wear is light, and as Guild used a medium-jumbo fret wire there is plenty of metal left yet.

The original hard shell case is included.
