The Hayman 2020 was a distinctively English design from James Ormston (‘Jim’) Burns and Bob Pearson built from 1970 to 1974 for Dallas Music Industries with the actual construction done by Shergold in London.

Hayman blended previous work by Jim Burns who had created the Burns line of guitars and basses, and Bob Pearson who had been involved in the design of many Vox instruments. The Burns company was purchased by the Baldwin piano company in 1965. The Royston Group, parent of Vox entered bankruptcy in 1969, and eventually Vox became a brand of Dallas Music Industries, sometimes known as Dallas Arbiter. Burns joined Pearson as a Dallas employee, and the two created the Hayman line with models appearing in 1970. Burns left in September 1971, and further financial issues led to the collapse of Dallas Music Industries during 1975.

Here we’re looking at a Hayman 2020 built during the first half of 1973 in London, England by the Shergold company under contract to Dallas. This is a semi-hollow, bolt on neck design with distinctive shapes and features.

The flat top and back body is flamed Maple with a center block and a pair of F-holes. This example is unusual with its use of Maple; most were Mahogany. There is a large cutout for the two ‘Super Flux’ pickups which are mounted on a thin metal plate and covered by a smoked acrylic pickguard bearing the ‘HAYMAN 2020’ logo. The strings feed through the body over the ‘Microtune’ bridge, and are connected to a ‘Vibrasonic chamber’ with several springs, a migrated Burns feature. This idea was sparked by the slight ‘natural reverb’ produced by the trem springs in a Fender Stratocaster. The neck is Maple, with a separate bound fingerboard and a ‘Slender Slim’ profile. The scale length is 25.5 inches starting with a zero fret. The headstock features a clear acrylic stylized H logo mounted completely through the headstock.

This fairly rare and certainly unusual Hayman 2020 guitar is in overall very good shape for its age, with light finish and fret wear. IT plays well and cleanly.

The original hard shell case is included.
