Huss & Dalton OM Custom Natural, 2002

Brand:

Instrument Categories: ,

Here’s a lovely Huss & Dalton OM Custom built during 2002 and in very clean original condition, sporting a ‘Stingray’ inlay set and Abalone rosette ring.

Built using the well proven Orchestra Model design, the Huss & Dalton OM Custom features an Adirondack Spruce top with tropical Mahogany for the sides, back, body blocks and neck. The bridge is ebony, the fingerboard binding is also ebony , the body binding is tortoise and the head plate is Indian Rosewood. The tuners are small-body, gold plated Schaller models with Ebony buttons. This example is a Custom modification to the stock OM recipe, and here the original owner specified an Abalone ring around the soundhole and Mother of Pearl ‘Stingray’ position markers. A faux-tortoise teardrop pickguard finishes off the top.

A small dent on the headstock has been touched up, but the guitar is otherwise in great shape, plays well and has the rich, well balanced harmonic profile that the OM is famous for.

The original hard shell, Tweed Huss & Dalton branded case is included.

The OM or Orchestra Model design dates to the late 1920s as banjoists started to shift en masse to guitar. Banjos tend to be fairly loud and have nearly unrestricted access to all of the frets. At the time, guitars tended to be small bodied with 12-fret necks and shorter scale lengths. Percy Bechtel, a well known banjoist and bandleader at the time approached Martin for a custom guitar, and the result was the 14-fret, 25.4 inch scale OM which has been in production since 1931.
