Just Arrived – Collings 01E

Instrument Categories: ,

We’ve just taken delivery of another Collings 01E! As usual with Collings, the simplicity of the design and presentation understates how good this guitar is.

The Collings 01E is a slightly customized version of Collings’ smallest regular guitar – the 01 – with an Engelmann spruce top rather than the stock Sitka Spruce.

In terms of body style, the Collings 01 is derived from a Ditson version of the Martin single-0 guitar.

Engelmann spruce grows primarily on the Western side of North America, from central British Columbia and south-west Alberta and as far south as New Mexico and northern California. It’s often used in place of German spruce, which now comes generally from areas like the former Yugoslavia and the Carpathian regions.

Compared to Sitka spruce, Engelemann can be a bit warmer and more responsive, and more suited to fingerstyle and softer playing – while Sitka can be very bright and punchy and really work well for hard strumming. Engelmann spruce also tends to open and mature in tone faster than Sitka. Finally and visualy, Engelmann has a quite bright white appearance compared to Adirondack or Sitka spruces.
